Overview

Pain & Palliative Medicine at Mangala Hospital

Pain & Palliative Medicine at Mangala Hospital supports two closely related groups of patients: those living with chronic, ongoing pain from conditions such as arthritis, nerve damage or past injury, and those facing a serious or advanced illness who need care focused on comfort, symptom relief and quality of life rather than cure alone. This is not organised as a single stand-alone speciality with its own dedicated physician — it is delivered through close coordination between our General Medicine, Onco-Surgery and Psychiatry teams, supported by Physiotherapy for non-drug pain relief, so patients and families get consistent, whole-person care rather than being passed between departments.

For chronic pain, this means a careful assessment of the underlying cause, a treatment plan that may combine medication, physiotherapy modalities and, where relevant, referral to the appropriate surgical speciality. For palliative and comfort care, the emphasis shifts to managing pain and other distressing symptoms, supporting emotional and psychological wellbeing, and involving family in decisions — in keeping with the hospital's long-standing ethos, reflected in its charitable trust and subsidised-care programmes, of extending dignified, affordable care to every patient regardless of the stage of illness.

If your family is navigating a serious diagnosis, our team can help plan care around what matters most to the patient — comfort, dignity and support — alongside any active treatment already underway with your treating specialist. This coordination is led on the General Medicine side by consultants including Dr. Roshan, Dr. Udaya Nayak and Dr. Raghavendra Bhat.

Our Approach

How Pain & Comfort Care Is Delivered

Assessment, symptom relief and family support are brought together in one coordinated care pathway.

Pain Assessment & Management

Chronic Pain Evaluation

General Medicine physicians assess whether pain is musculoskeletal, nerve-related, post-surgical or linked to another condition. The resulting plan can combine medication, activity guidance, physiotherapy and referral to the appropriate speciality when further investigation or treatment is needed.

Non-Pharmacological Pain Relief

Physiotherapy-Based Modalities

Therapeutic exercise and selected modalities—including superinductive therapy, ultrasound, wax therapy and short-wave diathermy—may be used alongside medication where clinically appropriate. Care is adjusted to the patient's condition, mobility and tolerance, with the aim of reducing discomfort and supporting safer day-to-day movement.

Palliative Support

Comfort Care Coordination

For serious or advanced illness, the team works with the treating General Medicine or Onco-Surgery specialist to manage pain and other distressing symptoms. Emotional support, family communication and practical care planning help keep comfort, dignity and the patient's preferences central throughout care.
