Overview

ENT Surgery at Mangala Hospital

Mangala Hospital's ENT surgical team treats the full range of ear, nose and throat conditions, from routine tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy to advanced micro-surgery of the ear and laser-based sinus and airway procedures — an all-inclusive, one-stop approach to ENT and head-and-neck care that has been part of the hospital since its early years.

Micro-ear surgery is performed using a dedicated Karl Zeiss ENT operating microscope, and nasal and sinus work is carried out under a three-chip endoscopic camera with Xenon light source — the combination that first brought Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) to Dakshina Kannada district. A 25-watt diode laser and 30-watt CO2 laser system, also introduced to the district for the first time by Mangala Hospital, extend the range of conditions that can be treated with precision and minimal blood loss.

The department was also among the first in Mangalore to bring the Medtronic STEALTH S8 Neuro-ENT surgical navigation system into routine use, inaugurated in January 2023 — a multidisciplinary technology, shared with Neurosurgery, that guides instruments through the sensitive skull-base region between the brain and the nasal and sinus cavities during complex transnasal procedures.

Micro-Ear Surgery

Microscopic Ear Surgery

Using a dedicated Karl Zeiss ENT operating microscope with an advanced optical system, the department performs stapedectomy for otosclerosis, myringoplasty for perforated eardrums, and other micro-ear procedures with the magnification and precision these delicate operations demand — aiming to restore hearing and resolve chronic ear infection with a single, well-planned surgery.

Sinus & Nasal Surgery

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

FESS uses a nasal endoscope with a three-chip camera and Xenon light source, displayed on an LCD monitor, to clear diseased sinus tissue and polyps while preserving healthy structures — a first-of-its-kind facility for the district when introduced. A micro-debrider assists in more efficient, precise tissue removal, and Laser DCR is offered as a bloodless, outpatient option for a blocked tear duct.

Laser ENT Surgery

Laser Surgery for the Ear, Nose & Throat

A 25-watt diode laser and 30-watt CO2 laser system — introduced to Mangalore and Dakshina Kannada District for the first time by Mangala Hospital — are used across allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps, tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, uvulopalatoplasty for snoring, and lesions of the larynx and oral cavity. Laser technique offers precision, minimal surgical time, less blood loss and, for laryngeal work, can avoid the need for a tracheostomy beforehand.

Advanced Technology

Medtronic STEALTH S8 Neuro-ENT Navigation

The Medtronic STEALTH S8 system combines optical and electromagnetic guidance with real-time imaging to help the surgical team navigate the sensitive skull-base region safely during complex transnasal procedures — including pituitary tumours, skull-base tumours, CSF rhinorrhoea and orbital tumours — bringing multidisciplinary surgical navigation to Mangalore and working closely with our Neurosurgery department.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see an ENT specialist for a blocked nose?+

If nasal blockage, facial pain or reduced sense of smell lasts more than 2-3 weeks, recurs frequently, or doesn't improve with basic medication, it's worth an ENT evaluation to check for chronic sinusitis, polyps or a structural cause.

Is FESS a major surgery?+

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery is performed entirely through the nostrils using an endoscope, with no external incision. It is generally well tolerated, with most patients going home within a day or two.

What is laser DCR and who needs it?+

Laser DCR treats a blocked tear duct that causes constant watering of the eye, by creating a new drainage channel between the tear sac and the nasal cavity using a laser — done as a bloodless, outpatient procedure without any external scar.

Can snoring be treated surgically?+

Yes, for select patients whose snoring is caused by excess soft-palate tissue, uvulopalatoplasty using laser can reduce or resolve snoring; your ENT surgeon will assess whether this is the right option for you.

How urgent is a suspected ear infection in a child?+

Ear pain with fever, discharge or hearing difficulty in a child should be assessed promptly — untreated middle-ear infections can occasionally lead to complications, and early treatment gives the best outcome.

Do you accept insurance for ENT surgery?+

Yes, we accept cashless and reimbursement claims from all major mediclaim providers and TPAs. See our Insurance page for the full list, or check with our billing desk for your specific policy.
